Story

"El Japón"

In Coria del Río in Andalusia, Spain, there are people who use the surname “Japón,” which is the Spanish word for Japan. Why is it that in the far-off land of Spain there are these people called Japón who identify as descendants of the samurai...?

In the 18th year of Keicho (1613) the Keicho Mission to Europe was dispatched from Sendai Domain in northern Japan. The genius swordsman Kamata Harumichi was among their number. After about a year at sea, the mission reaches its destination of España (Spain), but their trade negotiations with King Philip III are frustrated, and they wind up passing away uneventful days in a monastery in the countryside.
Then one night... In the town of Coria del Río, a young Japanese girl, Haru, who is fleeing from pursuers begs Harumichi to save her. She had been sold to a plantation as a slave but had escaped, and Harumichi, in an attempt to save her, does battle with her pursuers, but he doesn’t have a sword and so is put on the defensive. At this point, onto the scene comes Alejandro, a mysterious figure endowed with an abundance of weapons such as guns and short swords. Alejandro rescues Harumichi and the girl from this predicament. Haru and some other escaped girls are kept at a roadside inn for the time being thanks to the intervention of Alejandro. A few days later, Harumichi visits the inn, and encounters Catalina, the madam of the inn, wearing a mourning gown. Despite the sinful desire of the wealthy landowner Don Ferdinand, Catalina never yields, her cold resolve bringing to Harumichi’s mind the woman he had once loved. The diplomats are due to return to Japan, but Harumichi hears that Catalina has gone of her own volition to Don Ferdinand...
